Student on internship at InterMatrix: Wanna Learn And Live Life? Check Out Indonesia!

InterMatrix Communications
22 June 2007

WW's PR company, InterMatrix Communications, has had many excellent interns from many places, Bandung, Surabaya, Holland, UK, and exchange students from Australia.... Here is a story from one of our current interns, Tjabe Kruger, a Dutch student of South African descent now studying at Hogeschool Inholland Rotterdam.

Tjabe with Wulan and Rizka

Dear friends, colleagues, brothers and sisters,

As you might have heard and seen I am a very blessed person and I thank it all to God, my father. As you also might have noticed, the company Junior Expat (intern agency which brought me to InterMatrix) is very involved with the students it deals with. For example, we went to Bali with a group of students and this was the initiative of the agency. Also in Semarang I was more than welcome to stay with them and of course I did and had a great time.

On top of that, not too long ago in the month of May, an iExperience competition was held. The idea behind this was for Dutch students in Indonesia to write a short story about something funny, cool or interesting that they had experienced during their internship and provide it with three pictures. This story with the pictures would than be used next year at an event to show students that you can have a good time doing your internship in Indonesia.

We were contacted by mail suddenly and I thought it was a really nice competition because the winner would receive a free ticket to anywhere in Indonesia!

Quickly I wrote a short story with three pictures, did a little prayer and sent it to the manager of Junior Expat. And guess what? The night I arrived in Semarang, I was told that I was the winner!

After a few seconds of deep thinking I decided to use the ticket to go and visit Bali once again.

So during the last weekend of June I will be lying on a beach, enjoying the beauty your country has to offer... for free!

The “winning” short story:

Wanna Learn And Live Life? Check Out Indonesia!

Learning and going to TV shows on a weekly basis, meeting famous people…. (Pic.2)

One thing I’ve found out during my internship is that business and pleasure go together perfectly in Indonesia….

hehe.. namanya lucu.. Tjabe (read: Cabe :D) I wonder if there's a history behind that name.. :D
  2. From wimar on 22 June 2007 21:37:57 WIB
tadinya juga kita kira itu nama panggilan karena orang Belanda suka pake nama yang mengingatkan pada Indonesia. Apparently the name Tjabe has nothing to do with our "cabe" and Tjabe only learned here that his name means something in Indonesian .. :)

    the imx theme song:

smile - though your heart is achin'
smile - even though it's breakin'
when there are clouds in the sky
you'll get by through your pain and sorrow
    smile - and maybe tomorrow
you'll see the light come shinin' through
    if you just smile

Whew! Work hard, play hard? Why not? Life can be so stressful if you don't know how to enjoy it. Anyway, can you tell us what places in Indonesia you've been visited, Tjabe? Which one is the most impressive for u?
  12. From wimar on 25 June 2007 08:18:36 WIB
yup, hard work and hard play. right now imx is hard at work, and i am the only one still playing, so let me answer for tjabe:

actually tjabe has only been to two places outside the capital, bali and semarang. but coming from the outside jakarta is exciting enough. ctedit goes to TK coz he finds things to appreciate anywhere, even spending the night in an 8 Euro hotel in Jakarta with the crew and in the company of roaches and nice little mice.

he worked with imx and 350 primary school studets and Tjabe became the clear favorite because of his positive energy.

Thank you kindly for all your comments!

To my story I can add that I have also fallen in love with Indonesia like all of you haha. The experience here in Jakarta and of course IMX has been beyond my wildest dreams and I say that from the heart... Still have one month left and want to enjoy these last few weeks as much as I can (still going to visit Jogja and Surabaya :) ).

God bless all of you and your country,

    Tjabe aka Chili

    Hey Tjabe

I am also a Dutch student here in Indonesia doing my Internship.

I totally agree on the fact that here in Indonesia business and pleasure go together perfectly. My experience are well related to the experience of you. After being four months here in Jakarta, Indonesia I can say that the people always provide a warm welcome. Next to this I also had the opportunity to travel around and to experience more about the country and culture of Indonesia.

This makes an internship in Indonesia a worthwhile experience.

IMX g'luck always

Maybe it's the only company where business and pleasure can go together.

    good luck!

Being a long time resident of Holland (originally from Indonesia) and having a job here selling air tickets to Indonesia, I can tell you here why Tjabe, Martijn and other foreign students are so lucky to do internships in Indonesia. In my opinion it is not just because they had a chance to go surfing in Bali or seeing pak Wimar's TV shows, not even because of eating in fancy restaurants.

It is because unlike most visitors nowadays who think Indonesia is just Bali (why do 90% of our clients going to Indonesia only go to Bali and nothing else as Indonesia consist just of one island?), Tjabe had a chance to get to learn much more about Indonesia than the 5 star resorts in Bali or the discos of Kuta Beach. In fact Bali does not represent Indonesia at all, it just one part of the nation, the same like Amsterdam is not Holland and New York is not the US. Staying a while in Jakarta and the island of Java is frentic, not comfortable all the time, but being a few weeks here will show you a lot more about what really happens in Indonesia than staying 3 months in a villa in Ubud or Lovina Beach in Bali. You will experience Indonesia from the ultra modern society it is now (large shopping malls, offices, seminars, eating places) to still less fortunate situations many people still live in. You will get to know Indonesian people other than the souvenir vendors or disco DJs of Bali. Travelling around Sumatra or Sulawesi will show you even more about Indonesia (not to mention the other far less visited islands). Of course you should visit Bali as well, but you will learn that that island is only one (small) aspect of Indonesia. I think people who just flock to Bali are not really interested in Indonesia, they are only seeking pleasure, fun and comfort. Nothing wrong with that but they can not claim at all they got to know Indonesia the way people like Tjabe did. And they certainly they did miss the opportunity to gain other lifelasting experiences the rest of Indonesia can offer. I am sure that people like Tjabe will feel that way.
