Obama: Hot or Flip-flop?

Perspektif Online
12 February 2008

A good female (non-American)  friend I have not seen in a long time sent me three text messages out of the blue:

Wimar, what is this! I'm pro-hilary!

Despite being the hottest man in modern politics, obama is a pling-plang flip flopper!

:-) everyone has gone obama crazy!

Obama FAQ

by: Wimar Witoelar

Who do you like, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?

Both, actually. Anyone other than George W. Bush gives me relief. But the further away from Bush we can get, the better. That is why Obama is better than Clinton and Clinton is better than McCain.

What would be the most important message from an Obama victory?

That the majority of Americans do have common sense after all.

Do you think Obama is a great man?

He is an extremely skilled politician and a polished public speaker. He will be a great man if greatness is thrust upon him by the American people.

Are you excited that someone who lived in Indonesia could be the next US president?

To be honest it gives us quite a thrill. We find it difficult to produce great leaders for ourselves so it will be  great to produce a President of the USA. I hope he will invite an Indonesian to his inauguration, and I hope it will be me.

How will Obama be a better US president because of his Indonesian experience?

We are sure he will be conscious of the fact that Indonesia is a place of people, of pluralistic values which no doubt have contributed to Obama's own pluralistic values. He will respect the Indonesian people as much as the Indonesian government.

Do you mind terribly that Obama's Indonesian background is being used against him?

I don't take it personally. It is part of the barrier of exclusivity that President George W. Bush built up since September 11.

What effect do you think Obama's election would have on the US image?

It would immediately improve America's popularity rating. The George W. Bush years will seem like a bad dream. It will reaffirm our faith that America is the land of great people and great ideas.

So how emotional do you get over Obama?

He gives me a nice feeling of hope and world peace. But personally I am more driven my issues which are not in the realm of politics, let alone American elections where I am not a voter. Let Americans get back to their senses and I will accept the results happily. In the meantime, we have plenty of problems around here.  Not to mention my own complicated, albeit happy, life. :)

So, dear J, chill out.

Update: Reply from J

WiMAR! you can't put that on the net without asking me my proper views ! I am not keen on Obama because I think the defining tenet of George W Bush's presidency was the devolution of authority to so-called advisors, such as Dick Cheney, who provide incomplete and inaccurate information to the president. For this reason, America is currently staggering towards recession and is waging two failing wars. This is a serious situation not only domestically, but as the world's superpower, it concerns us all.

Obama openly professes that he is a beacon for hope and change and not an expert on the administrational ins and outs of running a highly complex states. He blithely gestures to 'advisors' to assist him. Who are these advisors? How would he know whether they were accurate or not? What are we hoping for? What change is being advocated? None of this is clear to me. This appears to me to be liberal, Democrat version of the popularist pap that Bush espoused to the Christian right. To this long alienated and under-represented community, he was a figure for change and hope. America does not need another figurehead. It needs a workaholic micro-manager who is harder on herself/himself than another other person in government and that is what we will get from Hillary.

Take the example of Iraq, obviously a key policy issue for all of us. Obama has publicly stated that he will and will not withdraw troops. To date, I do not understand Obama's position. Hillary advocates keeping the troops. In her capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee has worked hard to educate herself on the national security and she can add that to her other areas of expertise, such as HIV, microcredit, global health, foreign assistance. Education doesn't usually lend itself to radicalism, but centricism and caution which is one of the biggest critiques of Hillary. But, ill-informed change is where Bush has taken us so far and in so doing, given us a non-transparent, bickering and widely corrupt government that has caused great suffering throughout the world and the deaths of over one million Iraqis.

Obama is slick, handsome, charismatic and a breath of fresh air in American politics. I am grateful for the way he has roused the traditionally apathetic American voter and injected some life into what is ordinarily a dull campaign between old white men. This does not mean that he would make the best president.

"the further away from Bush we can get, the better. That is why Obama is better than Clinton and Clinton is better than McCain"

I hope you're the one to be invited sir...

So you could share with me the experience of having to meet the man of the year.... if he become Mr. President

"We find it difficult to produce great leaders for ourselves so it will be great to produce a President of the USA"....... my next questions is, why we can't?

    Cheers :)

After all bad dreams (or reality) that have happened to our country, I'm so glad if there's a man who lived in Indonesia will be the next USA President. Beside that, just hope that whoever the winner will bring USA to be more democratic and nicer to other country and will not command any war to any other country.

especially coz his campaign on environment issue is still the best I guess
  6. From albertus on 13 February 2008 21:25:20 WIB
what a surprise Obama is leading now! Are we seeing a future US president here? probably. Its still too hard to guess now, but statistically, better Obama vs McCain, than Hillary vs McCain, for the democrats, although anyhow I still believe McCain is a long shot.

Flip-flop or not, its better than having Hillary, for Indonesia.

Who do you think would be The Republican preferred opponent, Mrs C or Mr O?
  8. From Rani on 14 February 2008 21:06:04 WIB
His four years in Indonesia may unconsciously affect him. I mean, he went through all that weekly upacara bendera and weekly reciting of Pancasila and Undang Undang Dasar'45, that should affect him in one way or the other..

Maybe we can invite him to run for president of Indonesia 2009..
  9. From andri cahyadi on 15 February 2008 08:41:43 WIB
For sure the Democrat will win the battle. This is Democrat time after the Republican on power for 8 Years and people of America getting real f...k off about the war.

No wonder if people support Obama more than Hillary because like Wimar, me and other male, we have a penis!.

Should be Hillary can be the next President, why?, because its time for real women power revolution for the US and the world. That what real testing of our quality of human intelectual!.

    let see on March!

Nice reply by J, I can only say it was right to some extent with my opinion altough i believe that Obama could be a great president, All he need is an adminisitrative team behind him like JFK with his new frontiers....

He needs people like Robert Mcnamara to help him implement his vision to reality..... and I think he can find it.

if we choose Hillary, we know she could solve the problem because of her experiences, but could she give visions to the america and the world, could she change america and the world to a better one, could she influence peoples and lead them, I think she doesn't have that... her husband did have that but not her..

this campaign reminds me the campaign of Fauzi Bowo versus Adang.... Fauzi always remind Jakarta voters to pick him beacuse he's very experiences, he can work since first day at the office and bla..bla..bla....
the good thing for Fauzi he hadn't had opponent like Obama, just adang.. so He can win....

Hillary also has the same type of campaign them like Foke. The bad thing for Hillary she has an opponent like Obama,
    nightmare for her... hehehehehe....

If Obama becomes president, defeating Hillary, the symbology behind it will be: an ex-slave defeats the queen. Although Obama is not really your stereotyped african american and Hillary is not of british descent.
  12. From andri cahyadi on 15 February 2008 20:58:02 WIB
@#10 Yo J..., Of course Hillary could better changes for America and the world, She did that durring her husband era, dont you think she didnt giving any influence of Bill? Shes the 'brain' man!.

This is not about the issue that she's more expreiences, but she also good with giving a solution, if you saw the Democrat Candidates, you will undersand that point.

Obama just new 'boy' in America Politics, what will happen if he become a president people will using him like a pupet, they will control him in many way. His lucky, this is the time of black pride, young people, and again and again he had a penis! of course people will support him.

Do you thing it will happen with Hillary? No way! 'they' afraid of her. Because she come from middle class, fight for middle class!, thats why the elite and the coorporation doesnt like her.

And for American and all male who have a penis, it shamed to have women leader, this is still about 'male world'.

I think this is the time, women in charge, to gain their revolution, make history and changes for human intelectual process.

By the way, thats was ridiculous comparation ecer made between Hillary and Fauzi? come on! you cannot compare her ability with some one (Indonesian guy! what the hell)that silly guy, already become vice governor for 10 years and Fauzi that never ever had different opinion with Sutiyoso(*chicken shit*)? Hillary not even act single things like that!, shes have a brave spirit, and I hope she can make it, if people in America give her 'once' this opportunity.

I am looking at the dark side. Do you think Israel lobby will sit and watch and let Obama win the race? If elected in the primary, Obama should set up a four layers bodyguard to prevent him end up like JFK/RFK. ....oh, God forbid !!

what a brilliant answer WW :
"To be honest it gives us quite a thrill. We find it difficult to produce great leaders for ourselves so it will be great to produce a President of the USA. I hope he will invite an Indonesian to his inauguration, and I hope it will be me."

definitely, Obama is a Mac and Clinton a PC!

I read that there's an Idea to combine Hillary and Obama as a President and VP, although its still a long shot, but worth to discuss.

I'm quite sure if Obama or Hillary wins as a Democrat candiate, Republican probably playing with rasis issue, Woman.... or ... African American President? both is new to America, an quite easy to manipulate.

Obama annoys me. He is copying everything Hillary does. Even his stance is adopted from Hillary's. Hillary did it first and better and then out of the blue, Obama appeared, with what is basically her platform, ideas she has been stating for years! He represents total lazyness, lack or imagination and knowledge.
For Indonesians who like him just because he once lived in Indonesia and had and Indonesian stepfather and surname, it's just being ignorant. He is far from original. Let's face it, the minority are voting for him because he is black, the kids like him because he is different, which they think is cool but the truth is, he is anything but different. Watch the debates, he copies Hillary's answers, or just agrees with hers, he is just not experienced enough and can't yet speak for himself.

You are crazy if you think Hilary comes from and fight for the middle class, and Obama is an original gangsta. No, whoever wins (including McCain) is not gonna change the US foreign policy drastically; Kyoto will still get left behind, Geneva will still be a relic of the past, and US capitalistic dominance in the world through their enormous business practice will still control the little people and kill generations of culture.

It's all the same. You can't expect real change with a change of a president. It will all be face value, while the rich will still grind on the toil of the poor.
